Jackline Wauye’s Story

My name is Jackline Wauye and I live in Mathare North Area 4. In 2009 I finished my fourth form in Hono Secondary School. I really enjoyed the games, mathematics and geography the most while in high school.

When I first discovered the Hawkers Market Girls Centre, I was told that it was a place that girls like me could further their education. Since I got here, my greatest accomplishments are that I discovered my potential and changed my lifestyle. I also learnt how to use a sewing machine, how to use a computer, how to take care of myself, life skills, catering, accounting and girl guiding. In guiding, I have learnt volunteering services where you do something for someone else without expecting something in return.

Some more benefits of being here is that I have gained socializing skills, learnt how to solve problems, make new friends and got lovely teachers.

When I leave the centre, I would like to continue with catering in other institutions because I find catering very interesting. I would like to be employed in a restaurant or a hotel so that I can be independent. Another thing that would be interesting to do is find a job maybe as a receptionist, accountant or as a teacher so that I can improve the life of other girls.

I would like to support young girls worldwide when I get a little older. I want to teach them some things like recycling of plastic bags and if I am financially stable, I would like to start a school like HMGC. My role model is Mrs. Shariffa and I want to be just like her.
